Saturday Design Tip – Planning Your Drop Zone

Every home has one, but most of us never think about it. That place in our home where everything gets dropped as soon as we walk through the door –school bags, car keys, mail, wallet or purse, groceries and shoes you kick off as soon as you walk through the door.

Making an ideal drop zone requires a bit of planning. It needs to be adjacent to the route you use most often to enter and leave your home. Be realistic about this or it won’t work; are you a front door, back door or garage door family? Once you’ve answered this question truthfully, you need to allocate a desk size space for your drop zone.

The next factor to consider is a counter height surface for the initial drop.

Below the counter is an ideal spot for storing shoes and backpacks, perhaps even a box or crate for each family member, large enough for a brief case or backpack.

A small lock box or safe for keys is another good idea that means you will always know where to find your keys while keeping them safe from burglars or teens who want to borrow your car.

Electric sockets with phone chargers that stay there permanently are another good idea and a basket or box for mail helps too. In some homes, this is the ideal place to hang everyday jackets and coats but that really depends on the available space.

A properly planned drop zone can help to stop all that stuff from landing on the kitchen counter or island and reduces the stress of getting the family out on time every morning.
